The three boundary types
A territory's boundary answers one question: does this service address
belong to this territory? That answer drives auto-assignment on new
customer sites, the territory filter on the dispatch map, and the
day-of-week schedule.
postal boundaries. No map required. Best for most rural and semi-rural
operations, and for offices that plan by ZIP anyway.
when a ZIP is split between two crews, when you serve half a county,
or when the real boundary is a highway, a river, or a drive-time
radius rather than a postal code.
inside the polygon. Handy for "all of these ZIPs, plus that one
industrial park across the county line."
Switch between them with the Boundary type dropdown on the Basics
tab. The Boundary tab shows the correct editors for whichever type you
picked:
ZIP list editor
The ZIP list is a textarea plus a CSV upload path.
Pasting ZIPs manually.
Type or paste 5-digit US ZIP codes separated by commas, spaces, or
newlines. As you type, PortaPro shows a live preview underneath the
textarea:
`12 valid · 1 duplicate dropped · 2 invalid skipped (1234, ABCDE…)`
`+`, letters, three-digit prefixes, etc.). The first five are shown so
you can spot typos.
Uploading a CSV.
Click Upload CSV in the ZIP list toolbar. Rules:
ignored
row like `zip_code` or `Zip Code` is auto-ignored)
against what's already there
Click Template in the toolbar to download a starter CSV
(`territory-zips-template.csv`) with a `zip_code` header and three
example rows.
Saving replaces the full list. Whatever's in the textarea when you
click Save becomes the complete set of ZIPs attached to the territory;
anything previously attached that isn't in the current text is removed.
Polygon editor
Available when boundary type is `Custom polygon` or `Hybrid`.
The polygon editor is a full Mapbox map inside the sheet with a floating
toolbar. On first open it centers on:
Once a polygon is drawn or imported, the map fits to that shape. See
"Drawing a Polygon" for the full drawing workflow.
How auto-assignment picks between overlapping territories
Nothing stops two territories from covering the same address. When an
address falls in more than one, PortaPro's resolver returns candidates in
this order:
The first match becomes the tagged territory on the customer's site.
Keep boundaries tight if you rely on auto-assignment, or manually assign
the territory on the site.
